House Clearance Tips

We would like the opportunity to point out some area’s you should be careful with when dealing with house clearances and a general understanding of procedures. We know that when you need a house to be cleared it can be really hard to part with loved ones contents, we also know that many of you want to recycle as much as possible and this is something we also feel strongly about.

When engaging prospective company’s to view the property the first question you should be asking is, are they Environment Agency registered?  Many may tell you they are, there are easy ways to check by logging on to the Environment Agency website, but the quickest way would be asking to see it, it’s the size of a credit card, in colour it’s green and has a hologram of a skip lorry on it. On the reverse it should have the company details on it, there name, registration number and there company address, valid from and expiry date.

Without this card they can not legally dispose of your waste, so you have to ask yourself if they have no licence where will it end up. We hear about cases where items have been disposed of on a farm on a bonfire, or the entrance to a woodland walk. Companies are not allowed to take waste to the council landfills sites it has to go to an Environment Agency registered site, there are huge fines involved if caught for both the company and the customer.

Once you have discovered they are a reputable company they should be able offer you a free non obligatory quotation /estimate in writing on headed paper. Beware the company that gives you a price on the door step or the company only will only deal in cash.

At Avid Move we are happy to liaise with solicitors, estate agents or neighbours if you are unable to be at the property as you may live some distance away, all our quotations are sent via email or post as required. Our final invoices are sent with copies of landfill charges.

Generally speaking there are always items that just aren’t recyclable and this waste gets taken to an environment registered site, where we are charged by weight with the minimum being 0.5 tonne. If the contents in the property don’t have current up to date fire labels unfortunately these are classed as land fill, although they may well be new items with out a fire label we are not allowed to donate. In some instances there may be a value for your goods in which case values for those items would be put on your quotation and deducted from the final invoice.

As far as what will we take, well basically everything that you need cleared excluding garden waste, so contents of garages, sheds, green houses, lofts, houses / flats. We also offer a full cleaning service, just ask us for details. Where do we work? well everywhere within a 30 mile radius, Avid Move are based in Honiton and cover Sidmouth, Seaton, Colyton, Axminster, Chard, Luppit, Dunkeswell, Payhembury, Taunton, Newton Poppleford, East Budliegh, Budliegh, Ottery St Mary, Exmouth, Topsham, Ide, all of Exeter, Cullompton, Tiverton, Teignmouth, Torquay, Paignton, Lyme Regis, Charmouth and surrounding villages.

Donations to charities have become harder as they have become a lot more selective, generally speaking they will not take electrical items under recent legislation all electrical items need to be PAT tested, this is seen as a cost to them. Other large items are quite often rejected like wardrobes, dressing tables, sofa’s as these are difficult for them to store. If it doesn’t have an up to date fire label again they will not take it. There are some recycling shops around that will come and take the “cream” of goods from you, but remember this will still leave you the remainder to dispose of at a cost. It’s quite often better to get the clearance company in first see if they will offer a value for any of the contents as this will be deducted from your final bill.
